Economics Teacher Kristin McVaugh starts every class by asking students what they read in the news since they last met. As a teacher, she loves watching students fuse what they are learning in Honors Economics with what they see happening in the world.

Mrs. McVaugh will be leaving the Academy after 16 years of teaching. Over her Deerfield career, she has taught in both the Math and Social Studies Departments, coached Varsity Field Hockey, and been a dorm resident on Johnson II and Pocumtuck.

Mrs. McVaugh's favorite classroom memory was Liberation Day because she enjoyed “watching students thoughtfully analyze these policies and the execution of those policies and use their background economic knowledge.” Although she is excited for her next chapter, Mrs. McVaugh will “miss everything about teaching.” She said, “I love my students. I love my colleagues. I love talking to people personally.”

Starting next year, she will be working remotely as an economic advisor at a Boston-based company. About her next job, Mrs. McVaugh said, “I'm looking forward to learning something new, challenging myself, meeting new people, and just seeing what the business world is like.” Although she is excited to try something new—she has taught at Deerfield since graduating college—she is also grateful that she will still be around familiar faces in the Valley.
